Fire Smart Program

The First Nations FireSmart Program supports community safety by reducing the risk of wildfires to homes, infrastructure, and culturally important areas. The program combines FireSmart principles with traditional knowledge, land stewardship practices, and community-driven action. Activities typically include home assessments, fuel reduction projects, education campaigns, on-the-land training, and collaboration with local fire departments and provincial agencies.

The program empowers community members to take practical steps to make their homes and community safer from wildfire threats, while respecting cultural values and local environmental knowledge.

Purpose

The purpose of the First Nations FireSmart Program is to help protect the community from wildfire by reducing fire hazards, supporting safe land practices, and strengthening community readiness through education, home assessments, and culturally informed mitigation work.
